Sleep Bag: Shopping for A Ideal One

Don't approach the task of shopping for a sleeping bag with the attitude that 'all sleeping bags are the same' or that 'any sleeping bag is still a sleeping bag' - if you want to get to get a product that will really serve you well.

As it turns out, different sleeping bag designs are meant for different purposes, and if you make the mistake of going for the wrong bag for the type of expedition or other use you have in mind, then you would have nobody else to blame when the product turns out to be of absolutely no use to you; or if the product offers you less comfort that you feel that you paid for.

One of the things you simply cannot afford to turn a blind eye to when shopping for a sleeping bag is the temperature conditions for which it was built. In the interests of the users of their products - and keeping in mind the fact that temperature conditions vary greatly from place to place - makers of sleeping bags design their products for different temperature conditions, so that we end up with a sleeping bag that would be ideal for use in a very warm summer camp, but whose use in a very cold winter camp would be extremely uncomfortable, if not downright punitive.

For reasons like those, it important that whenever you go out shopping for a sleeping bag, and you happen to take a liking to a particular sleeping bag, to read the 'literature' that the sleeping bag in question comes with carefully. You should even, whenever possible, make enquiries with the person selling the bags, to establish what types of conditions the sleeping bag is meant for, and then work out whether they are closer to the real life conditions you are considering using the sleeping bag in.

The way through which you would be carrying the sleeping bag is another factor you have to take into consideration when purchasing one. If, for instance, you are looking to go camping in rugged campsites where access by car is impossible (so that you will have to carry your sleeping bag on your back to its final destination), then you need to ensure that you go for a product that is easily portable - like say one of the so called 'mummy bags' which are designed for convenient backpack transportation.

Another consideration you have to make with regard to your sleeping bag is its shape, because it turns out, shape is not just an aesthetic feature when it comes to sleeping bag design. As you will come to learn, for instance, different sleeping bag shapes have different heat storage implications - and you might actually find yourself being called upon to make some trade-offs. In this regard, for instance, a sleeping bag which is rectangular in shape will prove to be one that gives you plenty of sleeping space, but with a trade off for temperature storage (given that a rectangular sleeping bag has very poor heat conservation capacities). On the other hand, making the so-called 'mummy bag' your choice of a sleeping bag can afford you a sleeping bag with very good heat conservation capabilities, but at the expense of sleeping space, as the 'mummy bag' tends to be very compact, with considerably smaller sleeping space for the person using it.
