Helping Your Kids On Planning Their Vacation

School is out for the summer! How exciting for your children! In some cases, this may be a bit overwhelming for you as you wonder how you will entertain them all summer.

Your kids have gotten accustomed to being in school all day, and now they are looking forward to doing what they please all summer, right? Are you trying too hard to come up with activities just to keep them busy?

It is true that children should have some educational summertime activities, but it is equally important for them to have some free play time. They should get to have fun. While planning all of those activities and outings, don't forget to work in some time for them to just play on their own.

Free play time can take many different forms depending on the age and level of independence of your children. You will need to supervise your younger children during their free play time, but your older children will enjoy the opportunity to play on their own. You may enjoy the break as well!

Remember that this is still your kids' vacation. Let them have some say in how their days are spent. You will learn over time that having a few options ready will make you more comfortable in letting your kids decide what to do on any given day.

Letting your kids participate in the planning of their vacation days will go a long way in obtaining their buy-in.

On days in which you can't really let your children choose the activity due to scheduling or other circumstances, just tell them so. Getting some options on some days is great, but is not always possible. Be clear with your kids each day, and when there isn't any wiggle room, just tell them what the day's plan is.

By alternating between planned activities, free play time, and independent time, you'll not only give your kids a great summer, but you'll give yourself a few breaks here and there as well!
