The Importance Of Gun Safety

Guns are one of the most dangerous available items for sale in the United States, but this does not change the fact that most homes in America have guns, be it for hunting or personal protection. Needless to say, one can never have enough information on gun safety, especially if one is a gun owner. If you are considering purchasing a gun, or simply know someone who owns one, then here is some safety information that can be potentially life saving.

The first, and many agree is the most important, guideline is to never, under any circumstances, assume that a gun is not loaded until you have inspected the gun yourself. Check that there is no ammunition in the chamber, and fully disarm the weapon if you have no intentions of using. Each year there are multiple gun related accidents as a result of people trusting a gun to be unloaded when it either is loaded, or still has a projectile in the barrel. A rule of thumb that all people who handle guns employ is to never trust a gun.

Whenever you do take your gun out, be it to a forest for hunting or to a gun range for practice, keep the safety on at all times until you are ready to fire it. Forgetting to turn the safety on is a common, and often deadly, mistake that many gun owners make, and it should not be taken lightly. Even if you think you do not have ammunition in your weapon, keep the safety on, as you never know when there is a bullet or shell that was not discharged.

Another thing to maintain is ammunition. Ammunition maintenance may be one of the most overlooked aspects of gun safety. It is important that you do not store your ammunition in the same place that you store your gun. And you should definitely never store loaded weapons. A generalized rule of thumb among gun users is that the safest way to maintain them is to disable them until they are ready to be used. It is also important to never load your weapon until you are ready to use it.

It is also very important that you properly maintain your ammunition. When you store your gun, do not store it loaded, and do not store your ammunition in the same spot. You should also be sure to regularly clean your gun. Not only does it keep your gun in good condition, but it is good for preventing the gun from jamming or backfiring. Remember that with guns there is no such thing as being too careful.
