Where The Heck Is Sao Tome and Principe?
The tiny islands nation of Sao Tome and Principe sits off the West coast of Africa.
About the islands
These two small islands make up Africa's smallest state. Sao Tome, and its twin island Principe, are lush tropical outposts that sit in the Atlantic atop what was once a very active ridge of volcanoes. Its isolation from the mainland means there are none of Africa's famous 'big five' wildlife to be seen. The attractions here are the slow and easy pace of life, great beaches and friendly locals. That, and an almost complete lack of tourism.
The Islands were discovered by the Portuguese and used as a slaving port. That language is still the norm here and the use of English is sparse. You will need to learn at least a little Portuguese to make the most your travels here.
The twin island nation gained its independence in 1975 and held its first democratic elections in 1991. The country remains stable, but its residents amongst the world's poorest. This may change thanks to a recent discovery of oil reserves just off the coast, but nobody there seems to be holding their breath.
Unlike many African countries the risk of violent crime here is low. The main threat is airborne: all precautions need to be taken against Malaria when visiting the islands.
There are not ATMS on the islands. You will have to bring USD or Euros to exchange into the local currency (the Dobra).
Why Go All That Way?
What other tropical islands that have great beaches, friendly locals and world class dive spots (and gets only 20 or so tourists a week) can you think of? there can't be many.
Getting To The Island Nation
Flying direct from Lisbon, Portugal with TAP air is the easiest way to visit the islands. Return fares from Lisbon to Sao Tome are currently around 1200 Euro including tax on TAP's website. You can also fly from Liberville, Gabon.
Ask a travel agent if they can get you there. If they can, stick with them. Most people, including agents, will not have heard of Sao Tome. This might just be the best reason to visit. -->
