Choosing The Right Hamster Cage-Is Bigger Better?

A hamster is a solitary animal and they should live by themselves, in their own in their cage. Their cage needs to be the biggest hamster cage you have room for or can afford. The typical sized hamster is one square foot in size, but as previously stated buying a larger hamster cage is far more preferable.

Not only will your pet hamster love you more for getting it a larger hamster cage, it will be far happier with the extra space too. It is advisable to only keep only 1 hamster per cage as they are very territorial and will fight each other. This could result in them often seriously hurting each other, this does not apply to dwarf hamsters who are more sociable, but it is still a good idea to only keep 1 per hamster cage.

Hamsters are curious pets and will love exploring their cage, but never forget a hamster is a very good escape artist. So you need to keep this in mind when selecting its hamster cage, if you decide on one of the wire cages then make sure the opening between the bars is narrow enough to stop your hamster escaping. This applies more so if you decide to keep a dwarf hamster!

Hamsters are able to open the doors on some hamster cages, so if in doubt add an additional quick release fastener to the door this will keep your pet hamster from escaping.

A hamster should have playthings to keep it amused and a exercise wheel is recommended as well. Hamsters are a nocturnal animal and will be doing a lot of their playing, exercising and eating at nighttime. Because of this you want to make for sure the toys and especially the exercising wheel, are quiet when they are in use. This applies even more so if your cage is to be kept in your bedroom.

When living in a building where having animals is restricted taking a hamster as a pet might be just the way around this problem. It is good for your kids to keep a hamster as a pet as they will easily learn how to take care of their pet while playing and having fun with it.
