Good Dog Trainer - Bad Dog Trainer?

It is often a good idea to have an experienced dog trainer help you train your dog. To go about this, first do some research so as to determine who might be a good fit for you and your dog. Then go and check them it by sitting in on one of their classes.

When sitting in on the class, there are a few things you want to pay special attention to, because they will tell you whether or not the trainer is actually as good as you thought.

First and foremost ask yourself the following questions: Do the dogs seem happy? Are they enjoying the class? How are they reacting to the trainer? And how many dogs are being taught at the same time?

A ratio of about five or six dogs to one teacher is acceptable. Classes that encourage the participation of the owner and family members are also a great idea as this can give the whole family an opportunity to bond with and build a trusting relationship with the dog.

Also check out the facilities. Are they well maintained? And is the environment healthy and stimulating for your dog?

Personally, I would appreciate it, if there were a small number of entrances to the training area, and I highly suggest that you look at the doors and gates closely - do they have latches and / or locks? Also, overall, the training session should be enjoyable to your dog. He needs to want to come back to the dog school.

Thus, you are looking for a school where the dog trainers positively reinforce good behavior, and do not over react (i.e. hit a dog) when he displays bad behavior.

Another excellent way to find good trainers in your area is to contact various training and animal care organizations who will be able to guide you to a good obedience school.

However you go about it, absolutely do some research first. Don't just enroll in any class; there are big differences when it comes to quality. So make sure you get the best value for your dollars.
