How Do I Do CPR on My Dog?

Just like a human being, in the event of a traumatic accident you can administer CPR to your puppy. There are a lot of accidents that your dog could face that may require Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. If your dog is playing with an electrical cord and get shocked or even if your puppy is hit by a car, his heart or lungs could stop functioning and in the event that this happens, knowing the proper first aid that can save your puppies life is important to any pet owner.

In today's article we are going to discuss basic artificial respiration as well as CPR that you can give your dog in case the situation calls for it. Please know that the following steps are just basic guidelines and you are encouraged to take a small class on first aid so that you can be better equipped to handle an accidental injury to your puppy or dog.

1. The first thing you need to do upon finding your puppy injured and lying on the floor is to check for his heartbeat. If you cannot pick up a heartbeat then you must administer CPR immediately. Here are the basic steps:

A: On one side of the dog's chest, place your hand on the dogs chest and roll him on to his side. B: Using short bursts, compress the puppy's chest where the heart is located at. C: Every six seconds, you will need to administer a breath to your puppy which can be done by holding the puppy's muzzle creating a tunnel and blowing air directly into his nose.

2) Check to make sure that your puppy does not have any obstructions in his mouth or throat. While looking for an obstruction, also make sure to check for any blood or mucous that may be present. To do this check, you can place two fingers in the puppy's mouth and while hooking the fingers, sweep from one side to another as far back as you can go. If it is a small puppy you may only need to use your index finger.

3. In order to make sure that the puppy's airway is clear, pull the tongue out of his mouth. Then shut his mouth gently.

4. Next pull the lips over your dog's mouth and make them secure by wrapping your hand around the mouth and under the chin.

5. With your other hand, create a funnel to the dog's nostrils which should be as airtight as possible.

6. Now slowly but smoothly take a deep breath and exhale the air gently into his nose. Repeat this breathing action on your puppy every six seconds.
