How To Help Your Dog Stop Digging Holes
If you leave your dog will most likely try to get out of the yard and find you. Most dogs get separation anxiety. Try taking very short trips away from home, often, so he gets the idea that you are coming back.
By doing this, you will not allow him to think of a way to escape. After awhile he should not consider having to look for you because he knows that you are coming back.
Has your dog been fixed? If not, this is just another reason for him to dig out of the yard and go on the prowl when you are not home. You want to make sure he is alone when he comes home.
Consider the weather. If there is no shade or shelter within your yard and it is hot, your dog could be trying to locate a cool spot. When he digs a hole, the dirt is much cooler. The same goes for when it is cold.
He may be looking for a place to get warm. What better place than a hole to keep the body heat in. Give him some type of shelter from the heat and cold.
Is he burying things? It is ordinary for a dog to bury his food. He may not crave it at the time, but he does not want anyone else to have it either.
Do not give him too many treats, especially larger ones, such as bones, if you are not going to be around. If he can't eat it in one sitting, he will most likely bury it so he can eat it later.
Give your dog his own area to dig in, if you can. His very own sandbox would be great. Dogs love sand. This should be an area that you teach him is his own. Just like your kids require an area to play, so does your dog.
Whatever you do, do not try to scold your dog for digging a hole, unless you catch him in the act. If you just find the hole and try to show him what he did, he will not remember or understand what the problem is. -->
