How To Take The Best Care Of Your Pet This Summer

Summertime is practically here. For many of us, summer is a time for outdoor activities like swimming, hiking or just spending lazy afternoons in the sun at the park. But with the onset of Utah's summer weather comes the need to prepare our pets for the long, hot days ahead.

Hot weather pet care is often seen as an issue of common sense by many pet owners. However it might slip your mind that animals have special hot weather care needs that humans do not. If you'd like to prepare for summer pet care, here is a list of reminders to help you keep your pet happy and healthy this summer:

- Pets should not be left in a car in hot weather for any amount of time. Animals don't sweat the same way people do.

- Heat stroke is common in dogs in the summer. Watch out for signs of heatstroke such as heavy salivation, unexplained hyper excitement and excessive panting. If your dog shows signs of heat stroke, seek immediate veterinary attention.

- Provide easy access to shade and water for your pet.

- Preventative medications can prevent serious health conditions caused by flea or heartworms. Be sure to visit your veterinarian for heartworm and flea medications.

- Matted fur can cause skin infections. Make it a point to keep your pet well groomed.

- If you notice that your pet has round, red spots that have a puss like appearance, visit your veterinarian. Your pet might be having an allergic reaction.

The heat and warmth of summer can be enjoyable for your pet if you have made sure to be aware of their special needs. With shade, water and tender loving care, your pet can enjoy the summer months with you. If you have any specific questions about summer care for your pet, please feel free to consult your local veterinarian or email an expert at the Humane Society of Utah. Have a great summer!
