Effective Methods For House Training Puppies
By following the steps listed below, the chances of accidents in the house will decrease. Expect your puppy and dog to have an accident occasionally. This is just part of having an inside animal.
Be patient and consistent when training your puppy as this training period can last a couple of weeks or more.
Develop a routine.
As with babies, puppies learn faster with normal schedules. This helps the puppy learn that there is a time for going to the bathroom, playing and eating.
Normally, a puppy can control their bladder one hour for each month of age. If the puppy is four months old, he can hold it for about four hours. To keep accidents to a minimum, be sure to take your puppy out on regular breaks. For those who do not work from home, hiring a dog walker may be necessary.
Your puppy needs to taken outside when he wakes up, after he eats or drinks, and during or after playtime. Use the same spot each time you take him out and make sure to use a leash. Teach him to associate words like "go potty" with using the bathroom. Use the words while he using the bathroom.
Rewards are one way to teach your puppy. When he has finished using the bathroom praise him or give him a treat before he goes back into the house.
Using a regular feeding schedule will help with the bathroom schedule. Normally, puppies will eat three or four times a day. Feeding him at the same time every day will make him more consistent when potty training.
Always put your puppy's dish up at least two hours before bedtime. This will help in keeping him from needing to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Even he does wake up, remain calm, so he won't think that it is playtime. Turn a few lights and do not play with him. Go straight to bed after taking him out.
Supervise.
While your puppy is in the house, watch him so he will not have an accident.
Keep him by you by using a leash, that is at least six feet long, when you are not playing with him or training him. If your puppy begins to bark, scratch at the door, circle, sniff or become restless, take him outside instantly. He may need to use the bathroom. Once he is done, give him a treat or praise to reward him. -->
