Algae Control For Aquariums And Ponds

Figuring out how to stop algae from growing in an aquarium or ornamental pond can be tricky but there are many algae control steps that you can take that also include using special algae control products. There are many different forms of algae and the best way to eliminate them is to take away their source of food and nutrient.

You can streamline your system to minimize any algae growth as this will help even more when using a product. Light is required for most, but not all, algae to grow. To cut back on this algae growth you should limit the amount of time your aquarium is in direct sunlight. If you use an artificial light source then it should not be on for more than 12 hours a day.

To ensure that nutrients do not build up in the water which the algae can use to grow, you should change the water frequently and install a filter system. There are plenty of options for removing nutrients such as reverse osmosis, deionised water and adsorption resins. You also can stock your pond or aquarium with fish that specifically eat algae like the sucker mouth catfish.

You need to be vigilant against four different types of algae; green algae, brown algae, blue-green algae and red algae otherwise known as brush algae. Brown algae are the first type to grow as this does not require any light.

Red algae is the most difficult to clean and favors water with a high pH. Blue-green algae are actually very slimy and green algae are the most preferred by fish because they like to eat it.

Ponds can be very tricky as it is difficult to reduce light levels when you are out of doors. Pumps and filters are recommended as are natural products that will get rid of algae without killing any of the other plants or fish in your pond. These products are all environmentally safe and are an easy way to keep your pond or aquarium algae free.
