Flame Angelfish - How To Rear The Stunning Flame Angelfish

The flame angelfish (Centropyge Loriculus) is arguably the most recognizable member of the genus centropyge in the saltwater aquarium hobby these days. It owes this fact to the beauty this saltwater aquarium fish possesses. The whole angelfish is a very intense red to orange while its dorsal fin ends and accentuated by an electric blue patch.

Vertical black stripes that vary in number are also present across its body. Flame angelfish commonly differ very much with regards with their general color mixture and the number of stripes found on each specimen. Some angelfish seem to have a lot more orange than other marine aquarium fish.

Saltwater aquarium fish that have an unusually uniform red can be found in Hawaii. Their stripes are also a lot more narrower than other variants. Flame angelfish collected from the waters of Hawaii are rare as most of them are shipped from Christmas and Marshall Islands.

Once they have been suitably acclimated and have adjusted to the saltwater aquariums environment, they are strong fish. They are a grazing fish their natural habitats that consume algae, detritus and have been known to nip on corals . Coral nipping behavior is never a sure thing but the general consensus is they usually do not stop once they start nipping.

There have been many that have kept them for years without ever witnessing such behavior. In large systems with plenty of live rock, removing the offending flame angel is a demanding task that usually requires the use of a trap or physical removal of the rock structure to capture it.

They are not difficult feeders and will try out a broad assortment of foods in captivity. They can be pretty aggressive however. They do not tolerate the presence of other members of the dwarf angelfish family and will likely harass another flame angelfish to death if kept together in a small tank.
