Keeping an african grey as a pet.

The most popular reason for keeping African Grey Parrots is for their ability to talk clearly.

Their intelligence is often compared with that of a child at the age of 5.

Your pet can be easily trained to master an impressive number of words, speaks in different voices and even languages. For some, counting is no problem. They can also distinguish between different objects, colours and materials.

Length: 25/35cm.
Natural habitat: African Forrest.
Life expectancy: approx 60 years.

TYPES OF AFRICAN GREY

TIMNEHS: Maroon coloured tail feathers & reddish beak
CONGO GREY: Light/ silver gray bright red tail feathers & black
Beak.
KING JACO’S Unusual amount of red feathers.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR
AFRICAN GREY

PROVIDE:

Bird bath 2/3 x per week;
Perches of different size & texture for healthy bird feet.
Variety of Toys
Time out of cage to socialize.
Always clean fresh water.

THE CAGE

Minimum size in cm 80w X 55d X 121h
Keep away from open windows, drafts, & the kitchen
Keep covered at night.

FOOD

3-4 Teaspoons of a pellet or seed based, fortified parrot diet.
10% of diet daily or alternative days should consist of a bite size fruit & veggies. (Orange, melons, apples, carrots, spinach, broccoli)

HOW TO RECOGNISE A HEALTHY AFRICAN GREY

Clear bright eyes & clean smooth feathers.
Eats through the day
Normal droppings
Curious & active manner.

HOW TO SPOT SIGNS OF AN AILING
AFRICAN GREY

Loss of appetite & weight
A decrease in activity & grooming behavior
Change in droppings
Discharge from nose/ mouth
Sneezing
Feathers fluffed
Sitting at the bottom of the cage.
