Why Not Install A Martin House In Your Backyard

If you enjoy having birds visit your yard, and are also trying to find an organic means to get rid of bugs, you may wish to consider building or shopping for a martin house. Martins will get rid of many of the flies and mosquitoes in your backyard, meaning that you and your family and visitors are going to be able to enjoy more time outdoors. If this is the case, it's unquestionably to your advantage to find out more about creating the most comfortable atmosphere for these feathered friends. Here are a few suggestions which may enable you to attract these birds to your property.

For starters, you will have to understand that these types of birds must have a specific environment in which to thrive. A martin house should be situated in the most open spot in the yard, and you need to ensure that it is no less than 30 feet from your house. It's best if there aren't any trees within 40 feet of the birdhouse that are taller than it; if possible, you will want to put up the house approximately 60 feet away from taller trees in your yard.

It's also a good idea to ensure that you don't fasten cables to the birdhouse, particularly if these cables are attached to trees or to the ground. Martin houses typically attract lots of occupants when they're near water, so having a pond or birdbath means that you're very likely to appeal to plenty of birds.

Once your martin home is installed, it's possible you'll discover that some 'scouts' will come and begin making a nest there. It was previously believed that these birds were coming to check out the new site for the remainder of the flock, but in fact they are just the first to turn up in the spring and are merely taking care of themselves.

If you discover through time that martins will come back each year to the house you've developed for them, you might want to keep it covered until it is time for the martins to migrate to your area so that other species don't inhabit it. Purple martins will be especially prone to revisit the house each year, because they have been known to have a high level of loyalty to an area, in particular when they have been successfully able to reproduce there.
