Why Having A Chicken Coop Is Good For Your Children

Children might take for granted the long hard process of producing the food that they can easily buy at the supermarket. They might not know the difficulty of raising the hog that is made into bacon or ham. They have no idea at all about how farmers cultivate the land on which wheat is planted to produce their favorite cereal.

Living in the city cannot hinder you from giving your children some lessons and give real experience in how to raise and produce their own food. Chickens are good for this since they don't need large space and they are easy to care for. You can have a chicken coop right in your backyard and have a little garden on the side. If you raise hens for eggs, you will be assured of enough supply of fresh eggs everyday as one hen can lay four or five eggs a week. If you produce more than you need, you can let the eggs hatch so you will have chicks to raise. Your children will surely enjoy the experience of collecting the eggs and using them to cook their favorite meal.

They should be taught how to clean and maintain the backyard poultry. And since they are the ones who feed the chickens and provide water for them to drink, they will learn how to care for another creature. It should be a good lesson in empathy and responsibility which are valuable lessons that will help them in their relationships with other people and animals in the future.

Raising the chickens themselves, children will know that they can produce their own food at home and not just buy them at supermarkets. You can even have a backyard garden to go with the backyard poultry. The eggs from the pet chickens will teach the children the benefits of hard work and labor.

So teaching children how to be self sufficient is easy, just get them involved in raising the chickens in your backyard poultry.
